How Perfectionism Is Killing Your Productivity

Perfectionism is the ultimate productivity killer.

I really want that to sink in because I see a lot of momtrepreneurs out there getting caught up in perfectionism.

Maybe you’ve experienced this scenario before:

  • You have a great idea. In the shower. Because great ideas always happen in the shower.
  • You write this idea down in your notebook and start planning all the ways to execute it.
  • It feels good because you’re planning.
  • You are really, really prepared here.
  • Something is missing though.
  • You can’t seem to get it just right so you plan a little more.
  • It’s not “perfect” so you put it off another day.
  • And then another week and month.
  • Before you know it, your idea is a year old and you still haven’t actually done anything about it.

Sound familiar?

I know. Because I’ve been there.

Aiming for perfectionism in anything can be really debilitating. There is no such thing as a perfect product, a perfect launch, a perfect anything.

So, really, you’re just setting yourself up for failure.

I think a lot of people mistake procrastination for laziness. It’s true, some people who procrastinate are lazy, but a lot are just perfectionists who can’t seem to take that next step into action.

With a little work and intention you can break this pattern.

I’ve found that the best first step is to set up your next project with a plan that is “good-enough.” You can always adjust and change the plan as you go, but you honestly getting to good-enough is light years ahead of never starting at all.

Just starting will give you the momentum to continue on.

Remember that done is better than perfect. Most success stories are good-enough if look deep into their businesses. You aren’t a failure if you don’t have the perfect product or launch or process in place. You are working toward doing your best!

XO,
